Precision Solutions Cuts Family Farm's Claim Time in Half

Using precision data to adjust a crop insurance claim can cut the time it takes to complete the appointment and paperwork in half.

“The speed and accuracy with which we can use precision ag data to split production data eliminates the need for prorating production,” said Evan Harbert, FMH Crop Adjuster, as he recalled a 2023 claim he adjusted for a large farming operation in Central Illinois.

“The 3,000-acre operation included the father and his two sons, and we also insured the landlords,” he explained. “The cause of loss was a decline in price.”

The complexity of the landownership resulted in six separate claims Harbert needed to adjust for the whole operation.

“I knew the claims were precision before I arrived, since I have dealt with this operation before. The only thing I had to ask the farmer for was the calibration sheet,” he said. “He had it filled out but hadn’t uploaded it to the FMH Policyholder Center yet.”

To use precision harvest data for crop insurance per USDA guidelines, a policyholder must prove they have calibrated their combine within 3% accuracy during harvest. This can be done by recording calibrations on an FMH calibration record sheet. All precision records from a farmer, including production data, planting data and calibration records, can be securely uploaded into the FMH Policyholder Center for easy access by an FMH agent or adjuster, saving time and paperwork.

Because records were already uploaded for Harbert to access for this Illinois claim, he had most of the paperwork completed before even stepping foot on the farm.

Not only did Harbert spend less time with the farmer to adjust the loss, but the claim was also submitted and processed

sooner, resulting in a faster claim payment to the policyholders.

It took me around three hours to work those six claims using precision data. It would have taken me at least double the time had I worked the claims the traditional way. I would have had to measure 13 bins in three locations to gather total production. Then I would have had to split out the bins to the correct units and policies. - Evan Harbert, FMH Crop Adjuster

“The farmers are always happy with the precision claims process because it is streamlined and fast for them,” Harbert said.

“Precision data makes the claims process so much easier,” added Harbert. “With the growing popularity of the ECO+™ and SCO+™ products that need to have a claim worked every year at an Optional Unit level, precision makes the process that much easier and faster!"
